- Hanneke Felten (onderzoeker Movisie)
- Ellie Lust (voorzitter Roze in Blauw)
- Vera Bergkamp(voorzitter COC Nederland)
- Yassin Elforkani (jongerenimam)

UvA Pride Friday February!

Geplaatst op 24-1-2012 om 15:33.

On Friday the 3rd we are having another UvA Pride Friday. Don’t miss out on this one as we are having a great lecture held by the UvA sexuality and gender scholar Gert Hekma on sex in the Netherlands. And of course we will have our well known UvA Pride borrel afterwards!

  • 4-5 PM: UvA Pride Lecture. :‘What goes wrong with sex in the Netherlands’ by sociologist Gert Hekma. The Dutch consider themselves to be the most liberated people in the world. But there are multiple problems with this positive self-characterization. Let me give some examples. Why are young queers so eager to embrace straight norms of homosexuality, why do they take so much time to come out and why have so many of them tried to commit suicide? Why do we presume that kids under the age of 16 years are innocent and have no sexuality? Why have so many adult gays and lesbians psychic problems? And why is there so much verbal and physical violence in streets, school yards and sport fields against homosexuality? Such sexual problems are not restrained to male and female homosexuals, some 20% of the straight people suffers from physical and another 20% from psychological troubles regarding sexuality according to Rutgers/WPF research – probably the tip of an iceberg as many simply stopped seeking sexual pleasures. The Dutch have been successful in the international promotion of the idea that their schools offer comprehensive sex education but the reality is much less bright than the image. Moral panics regarding pedophilia, bestiality or prostitution show another problematic side of Dutch liberalism. These data indicate according to Gert Hekma that something is deeply wrong with Dutch sexuality. He will outline what exactly the problem is according to him and where we could find the solution. Universiteitstheater room 3.01, Nieuwe Doelenstraat 16, Facebook link!
  • 5 PM onwards: UvA Pride Borrel. Our borrel – always cozy and with cheap drink – is for all the students and employees of the UvA and their friends. There are always two board members of UvA Pride present to talk to! Don’t miss out on this gay phenomenon with brains. Atrium Café Binnengasthuis (UvA), Oudezijds Achterburgwal 237 Facebook link!

Help explore queer Amsterdam

CIEE is looking to introduce American student to Queer Culture in Amsterdam

CIEE is an organisation for American Exchange students in Amsterdam. Every semester we host 40 to 60 students who focus on social sciences at the university of Amsterdam. As an exchange student organisation we help students to get to know more about specific parts of Amsterdam, we organise small groups who for example work in a soup kitchen, teach English at a primary school, explore the founding of New York by the Dutch or explore the Queer Culture in Amsterdam. For the Queer Amsterdam Interest Group we are looking for a fun and enthusiastic interest group leader.

The American students who join the Queer interest Group have different reasons to do so. They are often curious about the different communities in Amsterdam, but find it hard to go to events or parties on their own. Some students might be gay or identify themselves as queer, and some students are just curious about different views on sexuality. The group consists of 3 to 10 students, typical activities would include; joining the UvA Pride borrel or other UvA pride activities, visit the gay film festival, attend a lecture, visit a theatre show or have dinner together. CIEE pays for all these activities and encourages the interest group leader to bring friends along to these activities (for whom CIEE will also pay). For the rest the interest group leader does not get paid a salary. The activities take place around every two weeks from January 30th to June 4th. At the end of the semester the group will go on a weekend excursion, the hostel and the activities for this excursion will also be paid by CIEE.

Interested? Please send a short email to athomas@ciee.org. For more information call Annabel Thomas at 020 620 2269.

NEW: AMC Pride Borrel!
