ARC-GS Lecture May: Resisting Psychoanalysis

Geplaatst op 7-5-2012 om 15:09.

Social determinations take over individuals at birth and assign them positions, roles, identities, and fates. Class belongings, but also categories of race, gender, and sexuality, function like the verdicts of an invisible tribunal which is both ubiquitous and terribly efficient. The talk will show how social magic allows mechanisms of domination to perpetuate themselves. It will also reflect on political struggles that can contribute to stemming those mechanisms. This entails constructing a theory of the social world and of subjectivation that resolutely turns its back on everything we inherited from psychoanalytical ideology and its normative perceptions. How does one become the subject of politics? And how can one think of oneself as the subject of several politics, which nothing, perhaps, comes to unify?

Didier Eribon is professor at the School of Philosophy and Social Sciences at the University of Amiens. A major figure in French intellectual life and LGBT studies, his work reflects more generally on the articulation between critical theory and leftwing politics. He is the author of an acclaimed biography of Michel Foucault (1989, English edition 1991) as well as classics such as Réflexions sur la question gay (Insult and the Making of the Gay Self, 1999) and Une morale du minoritaire. Variations sur un thème de Jean Genet (2001). His recent work has combined a severe critique of psychoanalysis (Echapper à la psychanalyse, 2005), with autobiographical and sociological reflections on social classes, sexuality, and cultural domination based on his own experience of joining the intellectual elite after growing up gay in the French working class (Retour à Reims, 2010).

Date: Friday, May 18
Time: 15:30-17:00
Location: VOC Zaal (Bushuis, Kloveniersburgwal 48)
Borrel: The lecture will be followed by drinks at gallery Arti et Amicitiae (Rokin 112)
The lecture is free and open to the public. Registration is not required.

UvA Pride Friday May: Remembrance Day!

Geplaatst op 1-5-2012 om 12:38.

Welcome to May! To make you feel at home in this month we are having another UvA Pride Friday this week. As this Friday is marked by the Dutch Remembrance of the Death we adjusted our afternoon to this occurrence. Subsequently we will have a special lecture that is not to be missed!

  • 4-5 PM: UvA Pride Lecture, by dr. Theo van der Meer: May 4th is National Remembrance Day in the Netherlands. This year for the 25th time remembrance ceremonies will be organized by several LGBT organizations. Marking an historical moment, for the first time a minister will address those present at the Gay Monument on behalf of the Dutch government. Historical indeed: some 40 years ago when representatives of gay organizations wanted to lay a wreath for the gay and lesbian victims of the Nazi’s during the national ceremony at Dam Square they were arrested by the police. Today gay and lesbian victimization is generally acknowledged and incorporated in national state formation ritual. In the decades since the incident at Dam Square this victimization has also become part of identity politics in LGBT communities. Yet, as far as WW II is concerned historical research since the 1980′s in The Netherlands has failed to show any significant numbers of people who during the Nazi occupation were prosecuted because of their sexual orientation or same-sex behavior. A memorial culture has come into existence in which LGBT victimization of mythical proportions – not just as far as World War II is concerned – has turned into a common sense that obscures both past and present. Such victimization and such identity politics also offer a wide range of possibilities for political abuse.

  • 5 PM onwards, the UvA Pride Borrel: Our borrel – beer only 1,25 – is there for all the students and employees of the UvA and their friends. There are always two board members of UvA Pride present to talk to and they are actually looking forward to meet up with you. Don’t miss out on this gay phenomenon with brains. We ask you in advance to respect the two minute silence at 8 pm!

Professor Waaldijk houdt oratie in Leiden

Professor Waaldijk stelt voor voortaan te spreken van ‘the right to relate’.

Queeristan 2012 comes to Amsterdam in May

Geplaatst op 24-4-2012 om 11:50.

The organization of Queeristan 2012 asks for the attention of “all queers, weirdos, sexual outlaws, challenging bodies, intersectional axes, fractured identities, homothugs, erotic artists, anachronisms, gender (un)performers, freaks, impractical shit-starters, villainous friends, revolutionaries, decadent peasants, dirty queens, art rebels, international anti-divas, prime numbers, friendly berserkers, confused youth, troubled elders, wild nothings, and everyone in-between”.

Queeristan is a festival organized by the queer scene of Amsterdam, which aims to “providing a space: not only an autonomous space that dodges logics of profit and commercialisation, but also a platform to both explore and counter the normative workings of gender, sexuality and identity.”

Workshops, performances, art, encounters, and togetherness will be held at Op De Valreep (Polderweg 620) all weekend. Nighttime fun goes down at OCCII (Amstelveenseweg 134), and starts Wednesday May 17 with the festival pre-party (featuring queer darlings Lovers), followed by a night of performance and experiment on Friday the 18, and a queer party on Saturday May 19.

Check Queeristan’s website for more information and how you can help out.
